Meet the members - Alice

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

We know that it can be a little intimidating contacting a society out of blue if you don’t know anybody at all. But don’t let that put you off getting in touch with us! We are a friendly group, love meeting new people and will make you feel very welcome from the moment that you arrive. Our members come from all walks of life and span the generations so there is no need to worry about not fitting in or being out of place.

I’ll start with introducing myself. I’m Alice and a bit of an ECWS ‘old timer’! I was brought along as a baby by my re-enacting parents and have just never stopped coming. I’m now in command of the Tyldesley’s musket block which means that I give the orders and direct musketeers during the battle displays in addition to checking that everybody has been fully trained and is safe. I started out as a member of the artillery but was eventually drawn to the musket block primarily because I wanted to use gunpowder and create loud bangs but still wanted the opportunity to be right in the action.

In my day job, I’m a secondary school history teacher so really love the chance to get involved in a more ‘hands on’ capacity rather than just in the classroom. My students love the annual ‘civil war soldier’ lesson where they have the opportunity to try on armour and handle the weapons!

I’d recommend being part of Sir Thomas Tyldesley’s to anybody. Although I know that by growing up as a member of the society, I’ve always been pretty comfortable within the society. But the things that appealed to me then still appeal to me now. The battle demonstrations are a lot of fun to be part of and one of the huge benefits of being a musketeer is that you can be as involved as you want or hang back as much as you want. The evening socialising is also a huge draw. There is something very relaxing about having the opportunity to spend time outside, sitting around a campfire whilst chatting and singing and being cut off from technology. Although I’m tired when returning from an event, I’m also very relaxed.
